“While he (Jesus) was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”
Matthew 17: 5 NRSV

Mountaintop experiences come in all sizes. Mine, compared to what happened to Peter, James and John , are hills and bumps. No matter. All evoke wonder and worship.

The ex-fishermen couldn’t have known what to expect that day. Jesus wanted to spend time with them and they with him. It was enough. God had more than an outing in mind. The trio not only saw Jesus transformed before their eyes but also heard God’s voice. No wonder Peter wanted to build shrines.

But that wasn’t the message. Jesus is God’s beloved son in whom God is well pleased. Listen to Jesus!

On the way back from a my own mountain experiences, I face the same question worrying Peter, James and John . How to spread the word about what I see and hear? Jesus ordered the men not to talk about that day until after he had risen. Those restrictions were lifted at Easter more than 2,000 years ago.

Father God, remind us that listening to Jesus includes talking about him as well as good works and building places to worship. Amen

How will Jesus speak to me this week? Will I listen?
