“When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter and John, and James, and Andrew, Phillip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.”
Acts 1: 13 NRSV
Someone was taking good minutes. A litany of names elevates the importance of record keeping. Qualified names—“Son of” and “Zealot”—provide additional insight.
Having recently sorted through my parents’ stuff of a lifetime, I ran across many names that, according to family lore, carry qualifiers.
Harry the Horse Thief. Fred the Failure. Merry Melvin. Irascible Ida. Mirthful Minnie. Unflappable Eunice. Vivacious Violet.
Makes me wonder what names define me. Dutiful Daughter? Ferocious Friend? List Keeper? Compulsive Control Freak?
I reflect on my loving Divine Parent who conceived of me and named me before I was born. What comfort in knowing that I am, among other qualifiers, Cherished Child and Unique Member of the universal family.
Loving Creator, remind us that no matter what qualifiers we earn through our lives, the one that matters is Well Loved Child. Amen
How does my life reflect that I am a beloved, precious child of God?
